A New Name for a Proven Product: From GoodOnes to Ollie

In April of this year, the AI-powered photo-sorting app GoodOnes launched in the Apple App Store. Six months later, with 400 million photo sorts under its belt, the company has decided to rename itself Ollie. We spoke to Israel Shalom, CEO and co-founder of Ollie, about this change and what his team has learned since launching.

A Mascot Turns Brand Ambassador

The new name, Ollie, comes from the company’s mascot – a cute little octopus that juggles photos and finds the best ones. "Ollie personifies the AI," Shalom explained. Initially, the brand had two separate identities: GoodOnes and Ollie the octopus. With the shift towards using AI to help sort people’s photos between favorites and those that should be deleted, it made sense to align the brand directly with its AI-driven direction.

How Ollie Works

GoodOnes (now Ollie) aims to make photo management easier by identifying the photos and videos you’ll want to favorite, keeping, or deleting. This is achieved through a machine learning algorithm that learns from user interactions. Shalom emphasized that this process is very personal, as users have different preferences when it comes to categorizing their photos.

What Makes a Good Photo?

When asked if the company had been able to determine what makes a ‘good photo’, Shalom replied: "We learned that it’s very, very personal. Some people think their food photos are junk, while others believe they’re the best thing." He also mentioned that kids’ photos are often considered the most important by parents.

A Subscription-Based Model

Over the next few months, Ollie plans to start charging for its services on a subscription basis. The cost will be $39.99 per year. Despite this change, Shalom is excited about how much more the AI program will be able to learn and assist in photo sorting.

The Real Problem: The Photo Mess

The ‘photo mess’ remains an unsolved problem, according to Shalom. Ollie’s mission is to help people manage their photos more efficiently using artificial intelligence.
